GEN NEXT DESIGNER - Debashri Samanta

LFW GEN NEXT DESIGNER - Debashri Samanta
Debashri Samanta

Debashri Samanta, believes in merging modern silhouettes with a hint of earthy sensibility. This Gen Next designer draws inspiration and engages with weavers around West Bengal to create the balance between down-to-earth sensibility and high-fashion boldness – giving a couture feel to her designs.

A graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, 2007 batch, Samanta uses innovative fabrics for designing modern silhouettes. She experiments with unusual textures, varied constructions and abstractions that blend to create the feel of modern-rustic. Targeted at the new-age woman who enjoys both exclusivity and her roadside chai, this eponymous label, Debashri Samanta was launched in 2011. It emphasizes unique handloom weaves with a touch of statement drapes that meld into comfortable and ready-to-wear clothes.

Samanta’s LFW SR 2013 collection draws its inspiration from ‘yarns.’ She shares “The charm of my collection lies in its interesting use of yarn which celebrates its essence, despite being a fundamental material in the construction of fashion garments. This collection is rich in the workmanship of our weavers and tailors. Surprising to most, the entire collection has been created from handloom cottons!”

Her collection will include gorgeous art-like textures that have been used to form constructed couture jackets, tops, bottoms etc., along with hand-woven fabrics like Kantha to create inspired billowy bottoms and dresses.

Karishma Jamwal

Karishma Jamwal, 34 years old Mumbai based Gen Next designer is an SNDT Polytechnic fashion designing diploma holder. She will show her collection, inspired by the raw and unfinished nature of an artist’s paintings, at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2013.

“The complexity of an artist’s mind is how my look is defined. The incompleteness in the garments and prints combined by kitsch silhouettes is what completes the look and feel of my collection” says Karishma of her work. The prints in her collection are in unfinished form of fine arts inspired from paintings and have been treated with a combination of techniques ranging from digital to block printing. The colour palette of her collection consists of earthy tones of soil infused with bright, vibrant shades and water-like flowing drapes.

Jamwal has worked with leading designers like Aki Narula, Manish Malhotra and HemantTrivedi before starting her own brand - Lotus Sutrinin 2010.  Speaking about her brand, she shares, “Lotus Sutrin-the highest form of teaching by the Buddha is where my brand name originates. It gives me immense satisfaction to express my myriad thought and expressions through my work.”

GEN NEXT DESIGNER - Shubham Kumar

SHUBHAM KUMAR

Shubham Kumar conjures-up visions reminiscence of the toil of an Indian villager. Using earthy tones like grey, browns, beige and a contrast of black and white he aims to portray the life story of hardworking Indians who fetch a living to the whole nation by working on agricultural and handloom sectors.

‘A final year fashion design student who has always dreamt of making it big in the design world’ is how this 21 years old Chandigarh based freelance designer describes himself. He is also the youngest participant in the Gen Next category at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2013. In the past, he has displayed garments at the INIFD stall LFW 2011.

Talking about his collection, Kumar says, “My collection is based on a theme called ‘India Lives Here’ which reflects indo-western outlook with a soft traditional touch. I have designed, created the base fabric and stitched the entire collection all by myself.”

Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Kumar aims to promote the use of Khadi and cotton through his collection. His label ‘Shubh’, too, does exactly the same and successfully stands out from the crowd. Shubh reflects the Indian traditions in an extremely unique way. “I would like to urge all designers to promote the use of Indian fabrics in their collections,” says  Shubham.
